Reimbursement for Teachers
What
makes this aspect of ACT!’s mission unique
is that it is based on reimbursement to teachers solely
for their prior school year expenditures that have remained
unreimbursed. When a school year has ended and teachers still have
not been reimbursed for their out-of-pocket classroom expenditures,
and this continues to be the case as a new school year begins, something
in the system has clearly failed our teachers, whether it’s
inadequate funding and/or cumbersome, prohibitive bureaucracy.
Given such a passage of time, it is indisputable that teachers considered
every item of unreimbursed classroom supplies to be so critical
that they were motivated to spend their own money without hope or
expectation of reimbursement. Such unreimbursed expenditures demonstrate
a teacher's extraordinary commitment and generosity toward our children's
education.
The
community, through ACT!, may not be able to reimburse
each penny for every teacher who went out-of-pocket for our children,
but it can salute the dedication of these teachers with some
community reimbursement.
Reimbursement
of expenditures from the prior year is based on the recommendation
of a screening committee of teachers. This committee reviews and
vets specific reimbursement amounts for selected individuals.
